What is an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC) And Why It Matters For Book Launches

There’s something surreal about holding your story in your hands—or seeing it pop up in someone else’s inbox, Kindle or Nook.

Last week, I hit a major milestone on the road to publishing Inkbound Inheritance: I sent out Advanced Reader Copies (ARCs)!

Whether you’re familiar with the term or hearing it for the first time, I thought it would be fun to share what an ARC actually is, why it matters, and a little glimpse behind the scenes of this exciting step.

If you’re an aspiring author, a book reviewer, or just a curious reader, you might be wondering: What is an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)? Why are ARCs such a big deal in the publishing world—and how do authors use them to launch their books?

Let’s dive in! I’m excited to give you a behind the scenes look at my process as well!

What is an Advanced Reader Copy (ARC)?

An Advanced Reader Copy, or ARC, is a pre-publication version of a book. ARCs are shared with early readers—often book bloggers, reviewers, librarians, and influencers—before the book is officially released.

ARCs are nearly final but may still have a few typos or unpolished formatting, like my book. (As I write this, my proofreader’s hard copy is on its way to her mailbox. Once she receives it, she will find all the typos that I need to fix before publication.) They’re not meant to be perfect—they’re meant to generate early buzz, collect honest reviews, and give a book a strong start on launch day.

Why are ARCs important for book launches?

If you’re wondering whether ARCs really matter, the answer is a resounding yes—especially for independent (indie) authors and debut books. Here’s why:

• They generate early reviews. Sites like Amazon and Goodreads rely heavily on reader reviews. Having reviews live on day one boosts a book’s visibility and credibility.
• They build momentum. ARC readers help spread the word on social media, book blogs, and review platforms.
• They provide helpful feedback. Even at the final stages, it’s incredibly valuable to learn what’s working—and what’s truly resonating with readers.
• They create community. ARC teams often become a core group of supporters and champions for the book long after publication day.

How I sent out ARCs for Inkbound Inheritance

I selected a group of early readers who love young adult fantasy and consistently share thoughtful reviews. They were chosen out of my friends, family, fellow authors I’ve connected with online and in person, and even a couple of New York Times Bestselling authors! Most of them received digital ARCs (PDF or ePub) and a couple received hard copies upon request.

Each email or package included:

• A note about the book and initial information on how to leave a review
• The review deadline
• A reminder that this is a near-final draft, not the final published version

Here’s a behind-the-scenes peek at the ARC process:

To distribute each digital copy, I used a platform called BookFunnel that distributes ebooks, reader magnets, and even makes direct sales to readers. As an indie author, I highly recommend using this platform. It makes distribution easy and secure. Using them means I don’t have to worry about my book potentially being pirated.

BookFunnel allows me to create a landing page with my book available. I just sent a link to my readers, and BookFunnel guided them through the steps to access it. Readers can enjoy my book through their internet browser, BookFunnel app, or their Kindle or Nook. AND, it’s free!
